The Hidden Handicap

The number your card does not show you, and the caddie who walks the next round with you.

You know your handicap. You have never measured the other one.

I shot 64. For one summer I went 67, 68, 69, round after round. And I could not take any of it to the course when it counted.

Same swing. Same body. The only thing that changed was whether a card was in my hand.

That gap is not talent and it is not discipline. It is your hidden handicap, and almost nobody has ever written their number down.

Here is how you find it. Take your last five scored rounds. Take your last five rounds that did not count. Subtract the averages. That is what pressure costs you in strokes.

An eleven is not an abstraction. It is roughly four shots a round, gone, and it is the four you will remember on the drive home.

Where it shows up. The first tee with an audience. The three-footer you have already made in your head. The hole right after a double. The eighteenth with a score you like. Every golfer knows these four moments, and every golfer has never once seen what they cost in total.

The four-week retest. Score it again in four weeks. That is the only honest way to know whether anything you tried actually worked.

And the thing that makes this worth more than a number. Pops, a man I play with, kept two scores for every round: his score, and the score he thought he should have shot. The gap nearly ruined the game for him. Your number is that story with a scorecard attached.

The teaching is not in here. That is on purpose. The nine holes are where the work happens, and this will tell you whether you need them.

Why I built this. My golf problems were never physical. At 49 my blood pressure hit 180 over 120 and my body made a decision for me. A book written for fidgety skeptics, then a mindfulness course, then a coach. Seven years of it. This test is the doorway I should have had at the start.

What's included

  • The Hidden Handicap test: your scored rounds minus your casual rounds. One number, and roughly what it costs you in strokes.
  • Where It Shows Up: the four moments that cost every golfer most, scored against your own game.
  • The retest: score it again in four weeks so you know whether anything actually worked.
  • The Looper: your caddie, any time. Before a round, after a bad one, or at 11pm. He asks first, remembers what you tell him, and reads the nine holes with you.
  • Credit toward The Looper's Handbook. Whatever you pay here comes off the course.

About Sabio

Sabio

I am Bill Gauthier. I have played golf since I was five, and I spent the last seven years studying why a game I could play beautifully in practice fell apart the moment it mattered. Trained in mindfulness and in coaching. A 64 in a casual round, a summer of 64 through 69, and nothing that held up when it counted. That gap is what this is about. Sabio is the name of the work.

Questions

Is this a real handicap?

No, and it does not pretend to be. An official handicap measures your best rounds. This measures the gap between you when it counts and you when it does not. That gap is what is costing you strokes.

So it will not lower my score?

Not by itself. It tells you where the strokes are and roughly how many. If you want the practice that moves the number, that is The Looper's Handbook, and every buyer of this test gets credit for what they paid here.

I only play twice a month. Ten rounds is months away.

Use the last five scored rounds you can remember and the last five casual ones. Three minutes. Test again in four weeks and watch the number move.

Why not just read a golf psychology book?

A book tells you to stay present and gives you nothing to do about it and no way to measure whether it worked. This is one number, four moments, and a retest.

Do I need to be good at golf?

No. The bigger your gap, the more this is worth to you. It works from a 30 handicap to scratch.

Will this fix my swing?

No, and it will not try. No swing tips, no drills, no equipment advice. This is about what you carry between shots.

Is this therapy?

No. It is a measurement, practised on a golf course. Nothing here treats any condition, and if you are in real difficulty, talk to someone qualified.

Refunds

If the test does not tell you something true about your game that you did not already know, email me and I refund you in full. No round count, no hoops.
